Reading Plant Stress Signals — The Agronomic Tools That Reveal Stress Before Your Eyes Can

In this chapter
After completing this chapter you will understand:
  • Three standard tools that can reveal oxygen-related stress early.
  • What each one measures and why it is relevant to oxygen.
  • Why early detection means the problem is still fully correctable.

10.1 Three Tools Worth Knowing

Beyond visual inspection, several standard agronomic tools can reveal stress — including oxygen-related stress — before it becomes visible to the eye.

NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) measures canopy “greenness” and vigour from reflectance data, whether captured by satellite or drone. It is sensitive enough to show differences between areas of a field well before those differences are obvious on the ground.

Chlorophyll content (for example, SPAD meter readings) correlates closely with nitrogen status. Because nitrogen uptake is oxygen-dependent, a lower chlorophyll reading can sometimes point to an oxygen bottleneck even where soil nitrogen levels appear sufficient.

Flavonoid and anthocyanin levels are protective compounds that plants produce under stress. Elevated levels — even without visible symptoms — indicate a plant is compensating for some form of physiological stress, which can include oxygen limitation at the root zone.

10.2 Reading Them Together

Used together, these indicators let growers catch stress at a stage where it is still fully correctable, rather than after it has already affected the crop. None of them names oxygen directly — but read alongside the visible signs from Chapter 9, they help build a picture of whether oxygen may be part of the problem.

Key Takeaway

NDVI, chlorophyll readings and stress-compound levels can flag physiological stress early, while it is still correctable. Because nutrient uptake is oxygen-dependent, these tools can help reveal an oxygen bottleneck that visual inspection alone would miss.
